Assessment: All quiet on the western front

Read the assignment sheet carefully, it contains all the info you need.
This is Outcome 2, it is worth 20% of your overal mark.
  • Read the assignment sheet very carefully.
  • Have you read the assessment criteria?
  • Make sure your essay is very well structured.
  • It is an opinion essay, therefore you do not need to provide a bibliography.

Prep for essay:

1.
Read page 43 - 47 and 101, 104, 105 in your book.
Draw up a table: Ideas about war before signing up /versus/ realities of war.
Use information from the book and the movie to fill your table up.

2.
Write down the essay statement.
Now let's pull the statement apart:

Analyse = "Show the essence of something by breaking it down and examining each part critically. Clarify any relationship between each part."
the ways in which the movie "All Quiet on the Western Front" challenges = to challenge is to question something.
romantic notions of war = idealised, unrealistic ideas about war
soldiers’ experience = what experiences did Paul have as a soldier? What else do you know soldier's experiences? (Book)
honour = Where in the movie was honour expressed / used? What else do you know about honour in war (Book, reasons to sign up)
patriotism = What examples of pattriotiosm did you see in the movie? What other examples of patriotism from that time can you give?

3.
Draw up an essay plan.
Intro: about 150 words
It should have a general introduction, stating what this essay is about and what you are going to be saying.
Paragraph 1, 2, 3 (minimum)
Each paragraph should talk about an element of the romantic notions of war. These paragraphs should be between 150 and 200 words each.
Conslusion: about 100 words: Restating IN DIFFERENT WORDS what you have said, you can be critical of the romantic notions, and highlight how AQWF challenges these notions.

We do not want a movie review. We want an essay about experiences of war, using AQWF as an example. You can use ideas from the book and use the knowledge you have gained so far.

Do not go over the world limit too much. Between 700 and 850 words is acceptable.
